Couples Therapy

What is a relationship?

I base my work with couples on how I define a relationship.

The simplest and most universally applicable definition is the more accurate definition.

This is the most accurate definition I’ve discovered:

A relationship is a pattern of communication.

Where is its source?

It might surprise you to know you started weaving this pattern well before you even met each other – even before birth.

Let’s just say that the pattern got its real start with your parents and how they connected – and/or didn’t connect. All your life, you’ve experienced the nature of that relationship as a witness.

As you’ve matured, you’ve experienced early friendships or perhaps siblings and other family members in their own romantic relationships.

You’ve consumed media and formed impressions of relationships you’ve seen on television, heard about in songs, and read in books.

You may even have had your own romantic relationships with others before you met your partner.

“…Ended before it’s begun?”

By the time you meet, you’ve already woven much of that pattern.

And that means we can trace most issues far back – outside your relationship – to circumstances that existed before you two became a couple.

But, why?

If a relationship is a pattern of communication, then problems in relationships are problems of communication.

Consider the communication in a romantic relationship like the spine.

When the spine is out of alignment, it causes all sorts of issues in other parts of the body.

My role as couples therapist is not to referee – you don’t need to pay to argue in front of someone.

And it’s not to solve your problems or take sides – I don’t know either of you. Nor do I want to change either of you.

I am a relationship chiropractor.

I’m here to teach you – with scientifically proven approaches – how to re-align your communication so that you two can mend things together and move forward.

You will begin to learn about, practice, and apply tools and techniques to communicate more supportively and effectively within the first session.

As we work together, I’ll train you to nurture a healthy, sustainable relationship.
